Children in Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, which is carefully planned to help the children progress towards achieving the knowledge and skills needed for compulsory education at the age of 5. Class 1 provides a safe, happy and stimulating environment in which structured play, exploration and individual choice are at the centre of the children's education. Outdoor play is also an important part of the Foundation Stage curriculum, and we have spent a lot of time and energy in improving the outdoor area for Class 1.

" Children make good progress from their starting points so that the vast majority achieve the skills and abilities they need to make a good start in Year 1 and a good proportion are well above expected  levels"                                                                                          Ofsted, June 2015

It is important for your child to experience both play-based learning and direct teaching during their year in Reception.  Planned activities available in the classroom environment are appropriate to the different ages and levels of development.  These activities can be both adult and child initiated.

We have forged strong links with 'Patchwork' our local nursery setting and we invite pre-school children along to some of our annual events, for example the dress rehearsal of our Christmas production. In the summer term children who are due to start at Huby School will be invited to weekly sessions to get to know the school staff and ease the transition to starting school in September.

Please download our New Starters Handbook to find out a bit more about starting in the EYFS at Huby School.
